- It has always been one of the poorest countries of the world. It’s no. 170 out of 174 of the UN statistics
- It has widely been destroyed by war and civil war; there have been armed hostilities for over 30 years
- Economy has collapsed, unemployment rate is up to 90 %
- Every 4th woman is a widow. 16 out of 100 children die before their 1st birthday. Average life expectancy is 43 years
- 85% of the Afghan population are not able to read and write, almost all the intellectual elite having fled
- Public administration and government were not functioning for a long time
- Unsatisfactory public transport and communication (telephone, post)
- There is only limited public health care, medical personnel is scarce
- One third of the population (about 7 million) fled abroad and only some have returned so far
